About API SQ and ILSAC GF-7A
What is API SQ?
The next gasoline engine oil category after API SP. It adds tougher tests for wear, deposits, timing chain wear and LSPI control.
What is ILSAC GF-7A?
The new fuel-efficient spec for passenger cars. It targets lower fuel consumption, cleaner engines and longer component life.
Is it backward compatible?
Yes. API SQ and GF-7A can be used where API SP or GF-6A were specified, provided viscosity and OEM approvals match the vehicle handbook.
What benefits will workshops notice?
Stable fuel economy, strong sludge and varnish control, cleaner turbos, better timing chain protection and reduced LSPI risk.
Do oil change intervals change?
Follow the vehicle maker’s schedule. The new specs do not extend intervals by themselves.
